So often, it was by the telling of stories—stories that we call parables—that Jesus would teach his lessons, reaching not only his disciples then, but all of us now, as his disciples today.

How many times do we hear the parables thinking “Oh, I’ve heard this before”—but the way we relate to the people or characters of the story that helps us to learn new lessons from that same “old” story every time we hear it, and makes the method so successful as a teaching tool.

We all have stories of what the Knights means to us. We all have a different story of why we joined, why we are active, why we want to share the experience with another man of faith to help his family. Many of my stories of course involve the financial needs of families, and I want to share what happened in the last few weeks to my family.

Many of you know that I have two daughters, and soon they will be 28 and 25 years old. Therefore, each of them had a GPO (guaranteed purchase option) come available from their juvenile policies.

So what is the story? My 25-year-old applied for the maximum amount of $100,000 to provide what I pray will be a nice retirement addition, and not a death benefit for me or her family someday. However, my 28 year old is uninsurable, and in fact went back into the hospital for a week and a half. While she was there we took the guaranteed aspect of her option, and we are very glad to have it.

Of course many of you have heard me talk of why we put policies on our kids and how important that these GPOs are. It is just one more way Fr. McGivney’s vision for our order protects our families every day.
